The First Year Advising Seminar is designed to support you during your first semester at Cornell and beyond.

 Specific goals include:

  • Creating a sense of community within Arts & Sciences
  • Introducing you to curricular and extracurricular opportunities within A&S
  • Empowering you to make the most of your college experience: pursue your long-term goals, discover new interests, and grow as an individual and a scholar during your time at Cornell

The advising seminar also aligns with Learning Outcomes at Cornell.

Cornell graduates will:

Take responsibility for their own behavior and well-being; direct their own activities toward the achievement of objectives, including goal setting, decision making, planning, scheduling, and time management; care for themselves responsibly; demonstrate awareness of themselves in relation to others.

Your Advisors at Cornell

The College of Arts & Sciences believes strongly in the significant role faculty advisors play in students’ undergraduate experience at Cornell.  Initially, that advising duty may be taken on by a faculty member outside of your anticipated major.  Once you formally declare your major, you will be assigned an advisor from within that department or program, and your initial faculty advisor will no longer have primary responsibility for you.  You are, of course, welcome to remain in contact with your initial advisor throughout your time at Cornell and beyond.

Additionally, you have an assigned Advising Dean within the College https://as.cornell.edu/advising who will play an important advising role for you as you navigate degree requirements, the declaration process, and any issues that may arise for you. Please visit your Advising Dean this fall.  Your Faculty Advisors and your Advising Dean work as partners to support and assist you, and to make sure that you have the information and resources you need to succeed.

You should feel free to contact your advisors at any time—that’s what we’re here for!

Mutual Respect

This seminar is a space of mutual respect. We pledge to treat everyone in this advising seminar with respect and consideration, and we ask you all to do the same. Discrimination or harassment of any form will not be tolerated. We respect and uphold Cornell’s policies and regulations regarding sexual harassment, racial or ethnic discrimination, observance of religious holidays, and assistance for students with disabilities.

Students Needing Accommodations

Cornell University is committed to ensuring access to learning opportunities for all students. Student Disability Services (SDS) is the campus office that collaborates with students who have disabilities to provide and/or arrange reasonable accommodations. If you are registered with SDS and have a faculty notification letter for this semester, please contact us early in the semester to review how the accommodations will be applied in the advising seminar. If you have an immediate access need, please speak with me after class.

Cornell Health Care

Cornell Health Care services help you manage an existing condition or deal with new stress and anxiety: https://health.cornell.edu/services/mental-health-care. Please reach out to us if, at any point, you are feeling alone and/or overwhelmed. We care about your well-being and safety, both in my advising seminar and on our campus.
